Aboriginal tourism grants program enhances Northern Territory’s tourism

The Aboriginal Tourism Grant Program is given a second round by the Territory Labor Government, supporting 14 new projects with funding over $220,000. 

Over eight Aboriginalowned and operated tourism businesses in the Top End are set to receive more than $135,500 from the grant programMeanwhile, six other businesses in Central Australia will benefit from $92,900 from the said program for them to develop their business plans. 

“We know that visitors across Australia travel to the Northern Territory to immerse themselves in the rich cultural traditions of Aboriginal people.” Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Natasha Fyles said. 

“This investment is supporting businesses in the Top End and Central Australia to enhance tourism experiences inspired by Aboriginal culture.” 

The grant funding is planned to back key projects in the region. This includes business plans, infrastructure upgrades, bush camp facility improvements and training programs. 

Saltwater Cultural Tours, a business based in Darwin, has been given a $19,500 grant to install two containers and decking for the development of cultural tours. 

The Menge Aboriginal Corporation in Central Australia is also awarded a $20,000 grant to support their concept plan for the development of a tourism connect hub and Aboriginal training facility in the heart of the West MacDonnell Ranges. The proposed facility is said to include accommodations, art and education, training and environmental projects. 

Minister Fyles also said the Territory Labor Government’s strong health response towards the COVID-19 pandemic gives tourists the confidence and safety to visit the Top End and Central Australia.  

The Aboriginal Tourism Grant Program offers grants up to $20,000 to expand the Territory’s tourism offerings and support businesses to improve existing experiences, develop new products or improve the sustainability of tourism businesses. 

The grant program is a key component of the Aboriginal Tourism Strategy 2020-2030 released in 2019.
