The Australian Government will rename its digital identity app, myGovID, to myID in November 2024. This change marks a significant step forward in improving the nation’s digital governance framework. This adjustment clarifies the distinction between the myGovID app and myGov, which serves as a different platform for accessing various government services. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) decided to implement this change based on recommendations from the Critical National Infrastructure myGov User Audit, which aims to clarify the distinction between the two services.

The transition from myGovID to myID is more than just a rebranding effort. The government actively improves digital security and user experience for Australians. As of September 2024, myGovID provides secure digital identity verification for over 13 million users, enabling access to more than 150 government services in both personal and business sectors. MyID will maintain these functionalities, allowing users to easily verify their identities without needing to re-enrol or change their login information. 

“Existing users will not need to set up a new myID. The transition will happen automatically through an app update, and users can continue to use their current credentials to securely access government services,” the ATO announced. This ensures that individuals and businesses relying on the app for essential tasks like filing taxes or accessing welfare benefits face minimal disruption.

Renaming the app plays a key part in safeguarding it from potential cybersecurity risks. Scammers may try to advantage over the transition by creating counterfeit websites or applications that imitate myID, so users should stay alert, the ATO warns. The ATO emphasised in its recent media release, “It is essential to download the app only from official stores and never share your login details with anyone.” This initiative enhances user awareness and plays a crucial role in strengthening Australia’s digital landscape against fraud and identity theft.
