DSO trials new approaches in improving the digital sector

The Australian Government’s Digital Skills Organisation (DSO) is currently undergoing a trial to test new approaches in designing digital qualifications and training in order to meet the skills needed for a job in the digital sector.

Under this trial, the DSO will be working with employers, job seekers and training providers across the digital sector to create improved qualifications and training that will meet the evolving workforce needs of the digital economy.

In order to address key issues and support workforce development for the sector, the DSO will be focusing its trial on entry-level data analysts and on improving the general digital skills that are required across the sector’s workforce.

The trial builds on the DSO’s successful Train 100 Data Analyst project, which is providing new and innovative opportunities for Australians to rapidly develop digital skills.

Building Australia’s digital workforce is an important part of the Australian Government’s Economic Plan. In fact, the Federal Budget had included the creation of 10,000 additional digital skills training places through the $2 billion JobTrainer fund, subject to negotiations with the country’s states.

“The Morrison Government’s Economic Plan to secure Australia’s recovery from the COVID-19 Recession has digital skills at its centre. This pilot is doing the work to ensure those qualifications are fit-for-purpose so we can improve our skills pipeline and bring more Australians into our digital workforce,” Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business Stuart Robert said.

“This trial will provide a picture of what specialist digital skills are needed, improve the relationship between employers and the training system, and get more people into jobs. Australia’s digital workforce is fundamental to our future prosperity— our Economic Plan is focused on protecting jobs today and through trials like this we are working to secure the jobs of tomorrow.”

The DSO is one of three industry-led Skills Organisation pilots the Australian Government designed for the digital technology sector. These Skills Organisation Pilots were created to inform broader improvements to the national training system.
