Thanks to over $100,000 worth of grants from the Support Regional Aviation Program, regional public airports and aerodromes across the state will receive vital upgrades and improvements.

The Support Regional Aviation Program is aiming to improve regional airport infrastructures such as runways, terminal facilities and fencing.

Projects under the Support Regional Aviation Program can include such changes as:

  • Sealing and resealing of runways, taxiways and aprons
  • Upgrading fencing, lighting and electrical systems
  • Extending and upgrading terminal facilities
  • Replacing items such as Wind Direction Indicators.

Aside from just improving the infrastructure, the program’s actions towards regional airports will allow them to comply with regulatory requirements, accommodate changing airline fleets, support the growth of regional aviation markets, and deliver regional economic and social benefits through improved air services.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said the initiative is a big boost for regional communities as the airports are often used by farmers to distribute their products and receive other necessary resources.

Minister Wingard also said that upgrading the infrastructures was important in unlocking the state’s regions to tourists who want to explore the state.

“The Marshall Liberal Government remains committed to growing our regional economy and improving regional services,” he said.

“Everyone living in our regions knows how important regional airports are to local communities, improving access to vital services and making travel across the state easier. Regional airports often play a critical role in emergencies, such as medical incidents, giving first responders better and quicker access.”

The initiative to improve airport infrastructure has proven to be popular in regional communities. Last year’s program awarding had funded infrastructure projects at airports and aerodromes in Elliston, Mount Gambier, Port Augusta and Quorn.

“We strongly encourage all public airports and aerodromes in regional South Australia to submit an application,” Minister Wingard said.

Applications for the Support Regional Aviation Program are expected to close at COB Friday 26 November 2021.
