Building an ecosystem through data has become paramount in today’s data-driven world. As it has become difficult for governments to collect and store vast amounts of information, it has become necessary to create a network that leverages data as an asset to drive innovation, decision-making, and progress.
Establishing such an ecosystem is something that the Institute of Environmental Science Research’s Chief Data & Analytics Officer Jan Sheppard believes in. At Akolade’s Aus Government Data Summit 2023, held at the end of March this year, she shared her journey of unlocking the true potential of data by establishing a sustainable information ecosystem.
Ms Sheppard, who started as a data gatherer and evolved into a data broker, emphasises the importance of building an organization-wide ecosystem through data. She highlights the need to think differently in the face of exponential change, encouraging curiosity and asking questions.
By creating a narrative around information, Ms Sheppard aims to affect change and improve outcomes. She shares examples of areas she focused on, such as a centralized model for shared services and disconnects between processes. Through data analysis, she was able to make improvements, solve issues, and drive positive change.
