The Cultural Facilities Corporation is an ACT Government statutory authority established under the Cultural Facilities Corporation ACT (1997), to manage the following significant cultural venues in Canberra.

 

Position Objective

To lead the Programming team to achieve coherence and consistency in the commissioning and scheduling of activities across the Centre’s three venues. The role will inspire the team to achieve consistently high standards of service delivery and foster a culture of problem solving and innovation.

The role reports to the Director and works closely with the Centre’s Management team to deliver the Centre’s overall strategic objectives. A priority is responsible for delivering a new Programming Strategy for the Centre. This will require the appropriate mix of subsidised, shared risk and commercial activity and hires is delivered across the venues.

The occupant will provide artistic leadership informed by strategic networking and coordination with touring companies, agencies and artists and organisations across the Australian arts sector.

The position will play a key role in developing and delivering initiatives to achieve a sustainable creative and theatre-making culture in the ACT, and build partnerships across the sector to support skill development, commissions and collaborations.

The role will develop and be responsible for the programming and venue hire budgets and meeting agreed budget and KPI targets.

 

Position Description

The Head of Programming provides leadership to the programming department to ensure the approved Programming Strategy is delivered consistent with its Performance Measures.

The Head of Programming works closely with the Marketing team to ensure box office targets are achieved, and that the overall brand and positioning of the Centre is enhanced.

The position builds relationships with counterparts in other Australian Arts Centres, with the Major Performing Arts companies and with commercial arts organisations to identify and present works that are recognised for their audience appeal.

The position builds relationships with ACT counterparts in the Cultural Facilities Corporation, other Canberra cultural and learning organisations and the network of creative practitioners to support greater collaborative activity and creative partnerships.

The programming department provides a direct customer service interface with patrons, presenters and other stakeholders such as schools.

The holds budget and financial responsibilities in relation to programming strategies such as, ETCETRA, schools programs & VET.

The Head of Programming supervises and mentors the programming department.

 

Duties

The following duties are performed under limited direction in accordance with Workplace Diversity principles and participative management practices.

1. In delivering on the CTC Programming Strategy, curate and ensure the effective annual delivery of a performing arts program.

2. Effectively manage all aspects of the Centre’s programming activity including:

  • The development and maintenance of the annual schedule and diary for all venues to ensure appropriate access and transparency of access
  • The development and maintenance of key relationships with the appropriate arts organisations, touring companies, commercial presenters and other venues in Australia.
  • The management of programming budgets and contracts of engagement in accordance with all CFC policies and procedures including delegations, etc.
  • work with the Director of marketing to ensure appropriate analysis of box office data, statistics, attendance records and audience surveys are undertaken to ensure the greatest knowledge of the current and future audience is developed;

3. Develop and maintain relationships within the national performing arts industry at the appropriate points and level for the purpose of optimising the capacity of the CTC to meet its charter through the attraction of appropriate shows and program material.

Essential selection criteria

The performing arts sector

Extensive knowledge of the Australian performing arts industry and in particular theatre and related organisations and a demonstrated ability to develop appropriate relationships within the industry that would optimise the Canberra Theatre Centre’s (CTC) capacity to develop and implement a program that is consistent with the Centre’s strategy.

Programming

At least 5 – 10 years of Programming in a venue, festival or other like context. Demonstrated experience of commissioning, co-commissioning, co-presentations, touring schedules, awards and other industry protocols and policies related to the CTC context. Ability to assess programming risk and determine programming outcomes consistent with the strategy and overall business sustainability.

Finance and Legal

Experience in managing budgets and negotiating related contracts in performing arts content.

Management and Leadership

Experience in leading and managing small teams in a performing arts context. Ability to plan and allocate work and resources for maximum efficiency and achievement within the boundaries of the job responsibilities. Ability to work independently without supervision, show initiative, work to deadlines, determine priorities and ensure deadlines are met.

High level written and report writing skills, oral communication skills together with well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to handle sensitive issues that require discretion, problem-solving ability, confidentiality and/or immediate response.

A knowledge of and commitment to the principles and practices of Workplace Diversity and Equity, Workplace Relations and Workplace Health and Safety and the ability to apply them to work practices. As well as a commitment to adhering to the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct.
