$153,041 plus superannuation ACT

Within the ACT Public Service, the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (the Directorate) vision is ‘shaping Canberra’s future’ and our mission is to be informed, connected, innovative.

The Directorate is responsible for a wide range of policies and programs within the ACTPS that includes areas as diverse as climate change policy, energy policy, nature conservation, environment protection policy, strategic and statutory planning, development approvals, building policy, land policy and economics, heritage and water.

The Directorate also includes the ACT Parks and Conservation Service, which manages nature reserves, national parks, commercial softwood forests and rural lands to ensure Canberra provides open and safe space to its community.

In addition, the Directorate provides corporate and governance support for the Suburban Land Agency and the City Renewal Authority. The Directorate, the Authority and the Agency when considered together are referred to as the EPSDD Portfolio

 

The responsibilities of the Office of the Surveyor-General and Land Information include:

  • Regulating the land surveying profession and cadastral surveying within the ACT in accordance with legislation. This includes,
  1. The examination of cadastral survey plans,
  2. Maintaining the register of surveyors and maintaining professional standards,
  3. Updating legislation and guidelines related to the practice of surveying,
  4. The extension and maintenance of the Survey Control Mark network,
  5. Provision of advice in relation to surveying,
  • Managing the ACT survey control mark network and associated mark register,
  • Maintenance of the Spatial Data Management System (SDMS), a geographic information system containing land and administration boundaries, roads, topographic information, heights (contours), and related information,
  • A range of customised mapping, spatial data access and licensing,
  • Place names and addressing,
  • Managing the baselines for testing electronic distance measuring equipment and GNSS, equipment respectively.

 

The Role

Undertake a range of duties which include:

  1. Statutory obligations of Surveyor-General as identified in the Surveyors Act 2007 and other legislation.
  2. Managing and leading the Office of the Surveyor-General and Land Information.
  3. Representing the ACT on relevant Territory and national fora.
  4. Implementing Workplace Health and Safety policies within the section.
  5. Maintain records in accordance with the Territory Records Act 2002.

 

The Position – Selection Criteria

Please limit responses to a maximum of 350 words per criterion

  1. Appropriate knowledge and understanding of the Australian cadastre and land tenure system particularly as applied within the ACT.
  2. Appropriate knowledge and understanding of spatial information and its applications, geodesy and emerging location-based technologies.
  3. Demonstrated sound people management skills, including the ability to lead, direct, provide feedback and develop staff.
  4. Demonstrated ability to manage work priorities and meet deadlines combined with the ability to motivate others.
  5. High-level oral and written communications, liaison, mediation, problem-solving and organisational skills. Experience in providing written advice, preparing replies to ministerial correspondence and developing policies.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to the implementation of the principles of workplace diversity, participative work practices, workplace health and safety, and compliance with the requirements of the Territory Records Act.

 

Qualifications and experience including prescribed:

  • Registered Surveyor
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, geographic information systems would be an advantage.
