In 2025, the Australian Public Service Commission Academy will expand its Data Analytics Programme to enhance evidence-based decision-making within the public sector. The programme equips APS staff in Canberra and across the country with essential skills in data analysis and governance, as well as interpreting complex datasets to improve decision-making processes. The government initiated the project and partnered with academic institutions like CSIRO and the Australian National University. The APS Academy announces nearly 3,000 public officials have received advanced research training. 

This initiative enhances data accessibility, strengthens data frameworks and incorporates artificial intelligence and cybersecurity into essential policy frameworks to advance the Digital Government Strategy. The solution meets the department’s requirements for secure data exchange, responsible data collection, and privacy-conscious cloud storage. Public servants who complete research internships can leverage their newly acquired skills to advance departmental objectives through this training.

“These programs aim to enhance the skills, knowledge, and capabilities of public servants, enabling them to tackle complex challenges and drive innovation within the Australian Public Service,” the APS Academy stated in an official release.

Training strengthens policy

The Data Analytics Programme provides practical training that connects data analysis with real-world policy development. It empowers public servants to create and execute solutions that tackle intricate national challenges. Every training area includes hands-on application within departments that directly influence service delivery and strategic planning:

Training content includes:

  • Analytical models for evidence-based policymaking are used by departments like Health to assess population-level data trends, enabling more accurate forecasting and targeted public health interventions.
  • Risk identification from fragmented data sources helps agencies, such as agriculture and defence, mitigate operational and compliance risks by consolidating and reconciling data across systems.
  • Cross-agency data sharing frameworks are developed to support collaboration on intergovernmental projects, such as climate response or economic recovery, while maintaining legal and ethical safeguards.
  • AI integration in digital tools supports automation and advanced analytics, allowing services like compliance tracking or workforce forecasting to operate with greater speed and accuracy.
  • Secure cloud storage management enables departments to scale their data operations while meeting APS privacy and cybersecurity standards.
  • Responsible data governance and privacy training ensure compliance with national frameworks and protect citizen data during policy planning and implementation.

 

The initiative emphasises the importance of data integrity and advocates responsible usage frameworks that align with national security, privacy, and ethical standards.

APS advances research

The Australian Public Service enhances its approach by integrating applied research to refine policy development and delivery through data usage. The Policy Research Programme empowers APS employees to engage in targeted research that meets departmental needs and focuses on pressing policy priorities through live datasets and real-time analysis.

“Public servants should consider how the research training aligns with their career goals and departmental priorities,” the APS Academy states, emphasising that departments have a crucial role in facilitating participants’ transition back into operational roles following their training.

The Sir Roland Wilson Foundation Scholarships provide exceptional PhD opportunities at the Australian National University. These scholarships enable public servants to apply advanced data techniques to tackle government challenges while remaining integrated within their respective agencies. These programmes emphasise fostering long-term capabilities rather than merely achieving short-term results, and they facilitate the incorporation of research into decision-making frameworks. 

More than 3,000 public servants completed advanced research training, as reported by the APS Academy, which points out the importance of domestic and international collaborations. The initiatives enhance the public sector’s ability to handle complex data effectively, facilitate the design of digital policies, and minimise fragmentation among systems.
