The Minister for Education, the Hon Dan Tehan MP, opened the Online Formative Assessment Initiatives’ (the Initiative) virtual Innovation forum.

With multiple sessions being held during August and September, the Innovation forum is bringing together key Australian education sector stakeholders to understand how technology and data can be harnessed to track student learning and assist teachers to access the best resources for their needs. The initiative is in its alpha (second phase) and once operational, it will help teachers by making clear connections between learning progressions, curriculum, and assessment, initially in literacy and numeracy.

Most importantly, the initiative will support more targeted teaching to help improve learning progress for students. It will give teachers the tools, flexibility and professional learning they need to plan teaching that will work best for the students in their classroom. It will also give students more insight into their learning and better understanding about next steps to improve progress.

The initiative utilises a user-centred design approach that focuses on prototyping, testing and iterating potential products for teachers, school leaders, students and parents. That’s why the virtual innovation forum is essential to developing products of the initiative. The initiative is funded by the Commonwealth, state and territory governments.

It is being implemented by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) and Education Services Australia (ESA) under the guidance of Education Ministers.
