As the Director of a team of professionals that provides expert advice to the Board, consumers, governments and industry in both Australia and New Zealand, the successful applicant will coordinate the development and review of food safety standards and other measures addressing food safety.

The successful applicant will also coordinate Australia’s response to national food incidents and food recalls, maintain the National Food Incident Response Protocol and coordinate FSANZ’s relationship with the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources around imported food.

The Director, Food Safety & Response also plays an important and integrated role as a member of the management group within FSANZ. This includes working collegiately with other managers and external stakeholders.

 

The key duties of the position include

In this role you will provide leadership and manage a section responsible for the following activities:

  1. Input into government policy and agency-wide positions
  2. Development or variation of food standards, in particular, primary production and processing and food safety/hygiene standards
  3. Coordination of Australia’s response to national food incidents and food recalls, and the maintenance of the National Food Incident Response Protocol
  4. Management of key government and industry stakeholder relationships around standards and incident response
  5. Coordination of the agency’s relationship with the Department of Agriculture and Water resources around imported food
  6. Management of, and liaison with, scientific and technical staff in the areas of food science, microbiology, communications and legal work

You will also work towards ensuring the support of consumer, industry and relevant state and territory agencies on matters relevant to FSANZ standards development, food regulatory and response measures managed by the section, and provide expert advice to Food Standards Australia New Zealand on food standard matters related to primary production and processing and food safety standards.

 

To be successful in the role you will have the ability to:

  • Work effectively with food safety regulators, particularly in relation to the primary production and processing and foodservice industries.
  • Coordinate the delivery of high-level advice in relation to the management of food hygiene risks and the development of standards.
  • Knowledge and experience in incident management and experience in agricultural and/or food service industries with respect to food safety and/or microbiology are preferred.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position of Director, you must have a degree in a discipline related to food safety, such as microbiology, food science or environmental health.
