The Collection Control, Conservation, Preservation and Digitisation (CCPD) program is one of three programs in the Collections Services Group, the others being the Collection Development and Management Program, and the Collections Transformation and Strategic Priorities Program. The Collections Services Group is responsible for the development, management and preservation of the AIATSIS Collection.

The CCPD Program is responsible for managing the lifecycle of material held within the AIATSIS Collection. CCPD consists of two units: Collection Control and Conservation managing the acceptance, condition, storage and ongoing conservation and preservation of collection material, and; Preservation and Digitisation managing the digital preservation of collection material.

The Senior Digitisation Technician (Print and Manuscript) works in a small team of specialist technical staff responsible for the digitisation of the AIATSIS Print and Manuscript collection material. This position reports to the APS 6 Team Leader (Print and Manuscript).

The key duties of the position include:

This important role provides the timely delivery of collection digitisation projects to meet known technical standards and with due regard to the content and preservation requirements of cultural heritage collection material.

This role involves the use of the digitisation and preservation equipment including scanners and cameras and software to manage the capture and mastering of images.

The ideal candidate will be committed to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and will demonstrate cultural capability. This may be demonstrated by:

  • understanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business within the agency and the outcomes the agency is responsible for delivering
  • an ability to communicate respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders, clients, and colleagues
  • an understanding of the current issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and how this is framed by history
  • embodying the concept of Yindyamarra in the handling of cultural heritage collection items, particularly Indigenous collection materials.
 

In addition, the ideal candidate will have:

  • demonstrated understanding of the role of a major specialist collection in meeting the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and researchers. This includes the capacity to learn about Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights, Indigenous cultural protocols and related cultural safety issues.
  • demonstrated high-level of experience in the digital preservation of print and manuscript Collection materials to international archival standards using cameras, scanners and software
  • well-developed interpersonal skills, including strong oral and written communication skills with internal and external stakeholders on complex matters
  • the ability to provide training and supervision relating to digitisation and related activities
  • strong time management and organisational skills, with the capability to organise and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines under limited guidance, and the ability to respond to change positively and flexibly
  • well developed oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with a broad range of people, and the ability to build and sustain positive relationships with team members as well as internal and external stakeholders.
