The Bureau of Meteorology is undertaking significant steps to deliver a more customer focussed, integrated and resilient national operation. This is an exciting direction for the Bureau which will change the way we deliver services to Australian communities.
The state/territory Senior Meteorologist HPR is a role located in each capital city across Australia and will report into the state or territory Manager HPR. The role will work alongside other state and territory based HPR and CE staff and connect seamlessly with national NPS, EPS and Business Solutions (BSG) teams. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to help grow the Bureau’s HPR capabilities in support of our emergency management partners.
You will demonstrate a curiosity and comprehensive understanding of how climate, ocean, weather and flood impacts on emergency management and first responded communities. You will have a deep understanding of meteorology with a complimentary knowledge, or ability to develop in hydrology, oceanography, and climatology. During extreme weather events, this team is expected to undertake extended working hours.

The responsibilities of the role of Senior Meteorologist at the of Bureau of Meteorology include but are not limited to:
- Working within a high performing team to contribute to zero lives lost through natural hazards by partnering closely with emergency management agencies across the country.
- Maintaining situational awareness of the weather, with particular focus on severe weather events that may lead to impacts.
- Delivering and coordinating the state and territory’s meteorological functions and coordinating partner engagement activities to capture their requirements for planning, preparation, response and recovery.
- Delivering continuous improvements to products and services tailored for emergency service agencies and first responders. A key deliverable of this role will be to champion new ways of working in communicating and engaging directly with partners, stakeholders and key customers to build, nurture and grow relationships.
- Connecting seamlessly and coherently within the Bureau’s national footprint. You will be responsible for ensuring operations are collaborative, responsive and built on the principles of innovation and continuous improvement.
- Collaboratively closely with your peers and demonstrating a high level of cooperation and innovation across CSG to contribute to the ongoing delivery of the Bureau’s strategic priorities.
- Building enduring strategic relationships with partners and stakeholders in the Emergency Management and first responder communities in your state or territory. This will include assessing the impact and value of Bureau services with emergency management partners through post event reviews and consultative forums to help them derive the greatest value from the Bureau’s services.
- Being the equivalent of a partner lead for the severe weather agencies and first responders in your geographic area. Engaging with emergency management partners to understand their requirements, participate in consultative forums, provide briefings to non-technical audiences and contribute to the co-design of new products and services.
- Assisting emergency managers with the provision of clearly communicated expert advice, interpreting impacts, timing, uncertainty and risks by connecting weather, climate and water information to customer’s decisions to help effectively mitigate their risks.
- Working side-by-side with our partners to deliver pre-season planning and preparedness activities, including desktop exercises and public awareness campaigns. Providing additional intelligence to support the interpretation of Bureau forecasts and warnings relating to weather and assisting emergency managers to make key decisions that keep the community safe.
- Demonstrating the ability to develop and deliver new and enhanced services offerings through the interpretation of partner focus and insight, and science and technical expertise.
- Prioritising your development opportunities and competencies, as well as those within your team, as you help develop and grow the Bureau’s DSS capability
- During severe weather events, you will be committed to supporting the Bureau and our partners outside the scope of standard working hours. This could include fulfilling operational severe weather warning roles as required, or delivering high-level briefings to partners, media interviews and press conferences during peak demand.
- On a day-to-day basis, your expertise and understanding of our partner agencies will be utilised to influence and collaborate across CSG and BSG teams to ensure local hazard and impact information is expressed in both our products and services, and within the local and national weather narrative.

Eligibility
A degree or diploma from an Australian educational institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which is appropriate to the duties; or other comparable qualifications, which are appropriate to the duties.
Successful completion of the Basic Instruction Package for Meteorologists (BIP-M) as defined in the World Meteorological Organisation Manual on the Implementation of Education and Training Standards in Meteorology and Hydrology: Volume I – Meteorology (WMO-No. 1083).
