The South Australian Government officially opened the Forestry Centre of Excellence (FCoE) at Mount Gambier, collaborating with the forestry industry and the University of South Australia (UniSA). This modern complex promotes Australia as a leader in forestry research, teaching, and technological innovations on a global scale. The FCoE aims to transform sustainable forest management techniques by combining immersive data analytics, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and artificial intelligence (AI) with advanced data analytics.
This programme demonstrates the government’s commitment to advancing the forestry industry through creative research, robust data management, and enhanced cybersecurity systems. Professor Jeff Morrell, a renowned wood durability specialist, will lead the center, which is set to be fully operational by January 2026.
Morrell stated, “I am excited to work across the discipline to help create a vibrant Forestry Centre of Excellence that builds upon the many excellent projects already underway and contributes to the state.”
Immersive data analytics through Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) plays a fundamental role in advancing the FCoE’s mission. Researchers and industry professionals use these technologies to replicate and examine intricate forestry scenarios within a managed, virtual setting. Innovative VR training tools fully engage users in 3D simulations of forestry practices, allowing safe training and evaluation without risks.
Josh Praolini, Workforce Development Manager at the Green Triangle Forest Industry Hub, stated, “The ability to track, monitor and interact in virtual environments opens the door to an exciting future for Australia’s forest industry.”
Researchers increasingly use virtual and augmented reality to investigate how climate change affects water use, plantation development, and productivity. Researchers create virtual models of plantations to predict how certain elements affect forest health and production, guiding more educated decisions. This approach significantly boosts data analysis capacity and actively promotes resilient forestry methods that withstand climate change.
The FCoE leads in using artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced data analytics to effectively handle and understand vast amounts of data. We integrate artificial intelligence algorithms with cameras and satellites to quickly identify and manage fire dangers. Artificial intelligence suppresses, recovers, and analyses digital forestry data, supporting more efficient forest management plans.

This initiative marks a significant partnership between government, academia, and industry, highlighting advanced research and technology. The South Australian Government pledges $15 million over the next decade to create the FCoE, showcasing its commitment to enhancing the state’s forestry industry. Premier Peter Malinauskas emphasised their commitment to delivering on an election promise by establishing a world-class Forestry Centre of Excellence designed to boost this already thriving industry.
The opening of the Forestry Centre of Excellence marks a major development for Australia’s forestry sector. Immersive technology, artificial intelligence, and sophisticated analytics will drive the FCoE to promote innovation, enhance data-driven decision-making, and boost sustainability practices. The Centre dedicates itself to climate-resilient forestry, enhances fire detection and management techniques, and develops a qualified workforce through its unique education and training precinct. The FCoE aims to enhance Australia’s reputation in forestry, foster cooperation between public and commercial sectors, and drive ongoing research to tackle new environmental and technology challenges.
