The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) Chairperson, Filomena Piffaretti, appointed Matthew MacPherson as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The Council made this decision at a special meeting on 29 August 2024. They made this decision after conducting a thorough recruitment process with a focus on finding a highly qualified leader for the organisation.

MacPherson has a wealth of experience in the local government sector. Before, the City of Nedlands held him in the position of Director of Technical Services, and the City of Joondalup held him as Manager of Infrastructure Management Services. His extensive experience in these positions has given him the expertise needed to successfully lead the EMRC.

Chairperson Filomena Piffaretti expressed her strong belief in MacPherson’s capability to advance the organisation’s strategic agenda, according to EMRC. Piffaretti said, “We are thrilled to welcome Matthew to the EMRC team.” “We will find his extensive experience and proven track record in local government invaluable as we continue to strive for excellence in service delivery and community engagement.”

MacPherson’s appointment is of great significance, as the EMRC aims to strengthen its sustainability efforts, particularly in waste management and environmental stewardship. The region’s long-term resilience relies on these projects.

The EMRC considers this leadership transition a major milestone, as it signifies a renewed dedication to its mission of promoting environmental sustainability and providing value to its member councils and communities. The EMRC’s appointment of MacPherson highlights their commitment to foster strong leadership and drive strategic growth, paving the way for future accomplishments in the regional council sector.
