Australia launches Rail Innovation Council
Share
The Australian government is taking significant steps to strengthen the country’s rail manufacturing sector and create more skilled manufacturing jobs. To achieve this goal, the government has established the Rail Industry Innovation Council (RIIC), an independent body aimed at providing strategic advice on innovation priorities and promoting competitiveness within the rail industry.
With a focus on increasing the production of rolling stock in Australia, the RIIC aims to drive the growth of the local rail industry and support economic development.
Chairing the path to innovation: Ms. Jacqui Walters
The Rail Industry Innovation Council will be chaired by Ms. Jacqui Walters, a seasoned professional with a background in transport, renewable energy, and venture capital funding. Ms Walters also holds the position of rail industry advocate. With her extensive experience working across federal, state, and territory governments, she is well-suited to provide strategic guidance to the government on innovation priorities within the rail manufacturing sector.
The establishment of the RIIC comes in response to research funded by the Australasian Railway Association (ARA), which revealed the potential for significant cost savings through a coordinated national approach to rail procurement and manufacturing.
The lack of harmonisation across the country’s rail networks has hindered competitiveness, leading to increased costs and limited investment opportunities. The new council aims to address these challenges by promoting better coordination and centralisation in procurement processes.
Advancing the rail industry: RIIC’s vision and members
The Rail Industry Innovation Council’s primary goal is to enhance the rail manufacturing sector’s competitiveness and encourage more rolling stock production within Australia. By fostering innovation and efficiency in the industry, the council seeks to support sustainable growth and create a favourable environment for increased investment.
The council comprises a diverse group of experts from various sectors, including rail manufacturing, academia, unions, and government. Members such as Queensland transport minister, Ms Rachel Nolan and professor at the Monash University Institute of Railway Technology, Mr Ravi Ravitharan, bring valuable insights and expertise to the table.
With representatives from industry bodies like the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and organisations like Queensland Rail and Aurecon, the council is well-positioned to drive positive change and address key challenges faced by the rail sector.
The establishment of the Rail Industry Innovation Council marks a crucial step in advancing Australia’s rail manufacturing sector and supporting skilled manufacturing jobs in the country. Through strategic advice, innovation priorities, and better coordination in procurement, the council aims to drive competitiveness, increase productivity, and attract greater investment.
By fostering a sustainable and thriving rail industry, Australia is poised to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future, ensuring a robust and efficient transportation network for the years to come.
