Dennis Desmond, a cybersecurity lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, utilised AI to elevate his educational framework and provide students with a cutting-edge simulation of cyber defence scenarios. Desmond incorporates AI technology to develop a dynamic virtual environment that allows students to engage with simulated challenges, such as hackers and law enforcement, in his innovative approach. 

To set this up, they need to create comprehensive virtual profiles, company logos, and even multilingual domains for hacking groups. The simulation challenges students to navigate intricate scenarios that involve a range of stakeholders, including rival companies and internal policies. The exercise also includes chatbots programmed to respond to students’ attempts at social engineering, which enhances the training with a touch of realism. This unique approach aids students in comprehending cybersecurity strategies and equips them to tackle the intricacies of real-world cyber threats.

Immersive cybersecurity education

Using AI technology, students can engage with a wide range of cyber threats, such as simulated hacker attacks and interactions with virtual law enforcement and rival companies. 

This approach allows students to put their theoretical knowledge into action in real-life situations. Desmond’s long-term goal is to create a comprehensive network called a “cyber range.” Students will be able to carry out various tasks on this network, including network scanning, vulnerability assessment, and equipment management. This initiative aims to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application, equipping students to navigate the intricacies of the cybersecurity field.

Boosting engagement with real-world simulations

Students can engage in authentic cybersecurity challenges through Desmond’s AI-powered simulations, which provide immersive virtual ecosystems. According to the GovTech Review, the simulations include intricate virtual entities such as company logos, employee profiles, and even a fully functional domain for a simulated Bulgarian hacking group. Students experience an immersive environment in diverse language settings, enabling them to apply their theoretical knowledge effectively in real-life situations. 

Desmond designs exercises that encourage active participation from students, resulting in a strong level of engagement. Desmond splits the teams into two groups: attackers and defenders, fostering a competitive atmosphere that encourages hands-on use of cybersecurity expertise. This approach has proven successful in fostering creative problem-solving. The University of the Sunshine Coast states that students have shown ingenuity in their approaches, including utilising phishing scams and identity deception. 

On the other hand, defenders have demonstrated a sophisticated grasp of hacking techniques and successful strategies to counter them. In their feedback, students emphasise the importance of this approach. The collaborative and competitive nature of the exercise has fostered the creation of innovative solutions and strategies. Desmond utilises AI to not only enrich the learning experience but also equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in the ever-changing realm of cybersecurity.

Desmond greatly enhanced the educational experience by equipping students with practical, real-world cybersecurity skills that are invaluable for their future. This educational framework incorporates AI, improving the learning process and creating new possibilities for future advancements in cybersecurity training.
