ERP solutions to propel government data analytics
Share
The Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) initiates a comprehensive search across the nation for innovative Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions that modernise government operations and enhance data analytics capabilities. The DTA announced a Request for Information (RFI) through the BuyICT Software Marketplace, inviting ERP providers to demonstrate their capabilities in delivering a secure, interoperable, and data-driven ERP system. This project helps the Australian Government’s large-scale digital transformation by giving agencies access to strong, future-ready ERP solutions that improve productivity, safety, and the ability to make decisions.
Chris Huang, Acting Chief Operating Officer at the DTA, stated, “Given we are a small agency, and our ERP needs are relatively uncomplicated, the DTA is exploring what services and solutions exist that closely align with our requirements.”
The DTA seeks detailed insights into current and innovative edge solutions that can enhance the agency’s digital capabilities. Key areas of focus include:
- Integrated reporting and data analytics: Innovative offerings deliver immediate data insights that guide decision-making processes. Agencies can use predictive analytics to forecast budgetary requirements, and automated dashboards improve the efficiency of financial reporting, reducing human error and strengthening accountability.
- Connectivity and interoperability: Solutions that seamlessly connect with external applications, ensuring smooth functionality across different platforms. Align ERP solutions with current government databases and tools, including MyGov and the Australian Business Register, to ensure smooth data exchange and efficient service delivery.
- Embedded automation processes: Solutions enhance processes, minimise human involvement, and boost productivity. Automated procurement approvals significantly shorten processing times from weeks to days, enabling quicker decision-making and enhancing service delivery for the public.
- Security and operational resilience: implementing strong initiatives to protect data integrity and ensure uninterrupted system availability. Because cyber threats are getting stronger, ERP solutions need to include full encryption, multi-factor authentication, and compliance with the Australian Government’s cybersecurity frameworks to keep sensitive government and citizen data safe from breaches.

The Australian Government announced a new approach for the Australian Public Service (APS) in November 2023. This initiative aligns with that announcement, granting non-corporate Commonwealth entities greater autonomy and options to modernise their ERP systems. The DTA emphasises the importance of using current services and solutions to avoid market overcrowding from unnecessary procurements.
Huang elaborated, “The DTA have always been strong advocates for agencies finding opportunities to reuse available services and solutions wherever possible, learn from the work conducted by other agencies, and not congesting the market with procurements.”
The DTA actively pursues ERP solutions, driving a significant advancement in the transformation of digital governance across Australia. This initiative strengthens government IT infrastructure and builds a solid foundation for a secure, data-driven public sector. Agencies will enhance their decision-making processes, improve service efficiency, and strengthen cyber security measures by adopting ERP systems that feature integrated analytics and automation.
The DTA collaborates with industry leaders during the RFI process to shape the future direction of ERP in government. The findings will shape upcoming procurement approaches and ensure the implementation of top-tier solutions. The DTA fosters digital innovation and ensures that government agencies possess the essential tools to navigate a complex technological environment effectively.
