Nerida O’Loughlin reappointed as ACMA Chair

Ms Nerida O’Loughlin PSM has been reappointment as Chair of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), keeping the position for a two-year term commencing 14 October 2022.

“I congratulate Ms Nerida O’Loughlin PSM on her reappointment as Chair of the Australian Communications and Media Authority,” Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland said as she welcomed the reappointment.

Ms O’Loughlin has had extensive experience in communications and media policy and regulation for decades and is well respected across the sector.

“Since her appointment in 2017, Ms O’Loughlin has spearheaded Government responses to the challenges arising in our increasingly digitised and interconnected society – from misinformation and disinformation on digital platforms, through to helping protect Australians from scams,” Minister Rowland said.

Ms O’Loughlin’s reappointment to the position provides continuity as ACMA works with the government and industry to deliver critical communications and media services.

In her time as Chair, Ms O’Loughlin has overseen a reshaping of the agency to improve its responsiveness, the strengthening of consumer safeguards, establishing the Scams Telecommunications Action Taskforce, and supported the rollout of 5G mobile infrastructure through spectrum allocations.

She has led the ACMA into new areas of regulatory effort such as work on misinformation and disinformation on digital platforms, online gambling and media diversity.

Aside from this, Ms O’Loughlin also led the agency in supporting the media and communications sector through the COVID pandemic to ensure it continued to deliver at a critical time for Australians.

The federal government looks forward to continuing working with Ms O’Loughlin and ACMA in the contribution of the communications and media sectors to an inclusive, connected, productive and creative Australia.

“Ms O’Loughlin is a professional of great experience and is trusted both within Government and industry, and I look forward to working collaboratively with her in her capacity as ACMA Chair,” Minister Rowland said.
