The Australian Government launched a comprehensive initiative to promote the responsible and transparent integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the public sector. This initiative boosts operational efficiency and builds trust among citizens and stakeholders. The Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) leads this initiative by implementing clear policies and accountability frameworks, significantly shaping the digital government environment.

Driving responsible AI adoption

1. Accountable officials

Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Andrew Morrison and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Tom Gilmartin will execute the AI policy as designated by the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA). Morrison emphasises the need to foster collaboration and innovation among the government sectors, while Gilmartin focuses on creating and overseeing comprehensive policy implementation strategies. This organisational framework ensures that AI projects align with the government’s overarching digital transformation goals.

2. Training and development

All personnel engaged in AI-related tasks must complete training in the fundamentals of artificial intelligence as mandated by the DTA. This initiative equips personnel with essential skills in data science, data governance, and data analytics, allowing them to engage responsibly with AI technologies. Morrison states, “Training is vital for empowering our workforce to utilise AI effectively while maintaining ethical standards.”

3. Transparency and accountability

The DTA implemented required transparency statements that outline the purposes and applications of AI in government operations. This initiative educates the public about integrating AI into government services and highlights the administration’s commitment to transparency and responsibility. The DTA maintains an internal register of AI use cases to foster oversight and responsible governance.

4. Pilot AI assurance gramework

The DTA actively evaluates AI applications through its involvement in the Pilot Australian Government AI Assurance Framework. This framework addresses essential elements of cyber security, including network security and data modelling, ensuring that AI systems stay secure and comply with national standards. The DTA actively implements a forward-thinking strategy in governance that effectively reduces the risks associated with AI implementation.

5. Generative AI Trials

The DTA has initiated trials of Microsoft 365 Copilot, a generative AI service that aims to boost workplace productivity. Staff must complete the necessary training before they gain access to this tool, emphasising the critical need to verify content generated by AI.  The DTA actively demonstrates its commitment to incorporating AI, highlighting the significance of data integrity and user awareness.
