The NSW Government’s “Tech Savvy Seniors” initiative is an important programme that aims to equip seniors with the necessary digital literacy skills to safely navigate the online world. Since its inception, this programme has successfully reached over 145,000 seniors, equipping them with valuable information to protect themselves from online scams, navigate government services, and stay connected with others through platforms such as Facebook. Public libraries and community colleges throughout the state offer readily available training sessions.
The NSW Government demonstrates its dedication to promoting digital inclusion as a key component of the Ageing Well in NSW Seniors Strategy: 2021-2031 by offering these sessions either for free or at a minimal cost. The Tech Savvy Seniors programme empowers participants by offering structured, step-by-step lessons that simplify technology. Engaging with digital platforms helps individuals gain confidence, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and connected society. This programme clearly demonstrates the NSW Government’s commitment to keeping seniors engaged and well-informed within the community.
Jodie Harrison, Minister for Seniors, emphasised the programme, stating, “Our seniors grew up in a different time, when technology was not as ubiquitous.” The shift to digital has opened up a world of convenience and connection, and we don’t want seniors to be left behind.” Harrison pointed out that the programme’s effectiveness stems from its capacity to empower participants, enabling them to overcome their initial reservations about technology and develop into skilled and self-assured digital users.
Mandy, one participant, shared her experience: “I used to be terrified of technology. Completing the Tech Savvy Seniors programme taught me so many new skills and gave me the confidence I need with both the computer and smartphone. I have now gone back to TAFE, and the programme has given me the skills to be confident with my coursework. More people should give it a go, as it’s a great programme to help you learn technology.”
The program is consistent with the government’s broader goals of improving resilience and providing information to older citizens, as stated in the Ageing Well in NSW Seniors Strategy. Teaching skills is important, but it is also important to ensure that seniors stay active, engaged, and connected in today’s digital society.
Tech Savvy Seniors aligns with the NSW Government’s goal of fostering an inclusive and digitally proficient senior community through its emphasis on practical, easy-to-follow instruction and its efforts to make technology less daunting. The Tech Savvy Seniors programme greatly improves the lives of older adults by showcasing how digital literacy initiatives can be effective. This program, with its focused approach and strong government support, demonstrates the power of structured and accessible education in improving their quality of life.
