Government launches digital leadership training program

The Australian Government emphasises the importance of strengthening leadership in digital project delivery by introducing a new training program for Senior Responsible Officials (SROs) who oversee digital projects. This essential programme launches in early 2025, supported by the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA). It provides senior leaders with the necessary skills to effectively manage and govern digital initiatives in the public sector. This training tackles the intricate aspects of digital project management, recognising the need to deliver real benefits to both citizens and businesses.
The program builds on a successful 2023 pilot, during which 91% of participants reported a significant enhancement in their understanding of digital project governance through the simulation-based approach. A participant from the pilot programme stated, “The content and delivery were extremely useful in enhancing my understanding of the Senior Responsible Officer role, and I am now much more confident in undertaking this responsibility.”
The forthcoming programme continues to emphasise real-world simulation as a fundamental aspect. Participants engage deeply in every stage of a digital project, from the development of the business case to project closure, ensuring they gain practical, hands-on experience in overseeing intricate digital initiatives.
The training focuses on essential leadership skills, business insight, and effective project governance practices. Jamie Whitcombe, Branch Manager of Portfolio Assurance at DTA, states, “We know that having leaders with the right skills and experience is fundamental to delivering successful digital projects.”
Leadership plays a crucial role as the Australian Public Service (APS) invests more in digital transformation. To achieve long-term success, maintain a project’s strategic focus and ensure compliance with the Australian Government Architecture.
The initiative emphasises the importance of learning from each other and collaborating. The programme establishes enduring professional connections among participants, promotes the sharing of ideas, and nurtures a culture of ongoing enhancement in digital governance. Whitcombe stresses that the pilot’s insights significantly improve the program. “Since the pilot, we have been working to strengthen the programme based on feedback, including incorporating lessons learned from recent digital projects and adding a focus on building the commercial acumen of participants.”
The programme empowers senior leaders with essential skills to tackle prevalent issues in digital government initiatives, including project delays, budget overruns, and the inability to fulfil user expectations. SROs will equip themselves more effectively to guide digital projects to success by implementing stringent assurance frameworks and benefits management strategies. Essential elements drive the desired results from digital government initiatives, ensuring that public sector digital transformation aligns with the changing requirements of Australian citizens.
This new training initiative aligns with existing leadership development programmes within the APS, including the SES Band 1 and Band 2 Leadership Development Programmes, which strengthen executive capability throughout the public service. The rapid pace of digital transformation drives an urgent demand for adept leaders who can effectively oversee these initiatives. The SRO training programme significantly improves the APS’s ability to deliver digital services efficiently.
