Digital Government Booking

Services Australia introduced a convenient national online appointment booking system. Australians can easily schedule their appointments at over 300 service centres using this system, eliminating the need to endure long queues. This system aims to offer individuals a more efficient and accessible method to handle their appointments with Services Australia, based on a successful pilot in Hobart earlier this year.

Bill Shorten, the Minister for Government Services and the National Disability Insurance Scheme, emphasised the convenience of the new system. He stated, “At last, you can book appointments to see Services Australia online, not just turn up and be kept waiting.” The initiative particularly benefits vulnerable groups, such as older Australians, people with disabilities, parents with young children, and carers, by providing an easy-to-use option for them to secure appointments without facing the challenges of in-person queuing.

Online booking features

The online booking system has experienced an impressive surge in popularity since its recent national launch, with over 81,700 appointments scheduled. The Centrelink online account via myGov or the Centrelink Express Plus mobile app allows users to book, reschedule, or cancel appointments, providing them with flexibility and convenience. You can schedule either a 15-minute phone consultation or a 30-minute in-person meeting with our staff members at our local service centres.

The online booking system offers a wide range of services, including crucial welfare and support services such as:

  • ABSTUDY
  • Age Pension
  • Carer Payment
  • Digital Coaching
  • Disability Support Pension
  • JobSeeker Payment
  • Parenting Payment (both partnered and single)
  • Youth Allowance
  • My Aged Care (general face-to-face appointments)

Minister Shorten highlighted the convenience of the service, stating, “People can go online and choose a time that suits them for an appointment, either on the phone or at their chosen service centre, and they don’t have to spend time in a queue.” This feature combines digital convenience and personal interaction, creating a hybrid model that meets the needs of a wide range of users.

Future system enhancements

Ongoing initiatives to improve accessibility and alleviate service backlogs include implementing the online appointment booking system nationwide. Minister Shorten highlighted the positive impact of adding 3,000 new staff members, resulting in a significant reduction in claims backlogs and phone wait times. Services Australia sees the introduction of the online booking feature as a significant advancement in improving overall efficiency.

“Ongoing improvements mean more Australians are getting the assistance they need, when they need it,” Minister Shorten stated. The online booking system will undergo continuous improvements, with upcoming updates aimed at simplifying access and enhancing the user experience throughout the service.

Through this initiative, the government demonstrates its commitment to updating service delivery, ensuring that all Australians, especially those who require it the most, can promptly access the necessary support services for their overall well-being.
