ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R) has welcomed the arrival of the first plug-in hybrid electric heavy vehicle in the ACT, marking a significant milestone for the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) and the ACT Government.  

The introduction of this vehicle represents a commitment to creating a sustainable future and setting an example for the rest of the nation. 

“The world around us is rapidly changing, both in terms of technology, workplace diversity and the environment,” Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman said. 

“To lead by example and take a step forward in creating a sustainable future is a step that I hope others around the nation will also be empowered to take.” 

Minister Mick Gentleman stated that the vehicle’s advanced safety features and custom architectural design will bring about a significant transformation in how the ESA fleet operates. 

He explained that the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle operates entirely on electric power, supplemented by a diesel range extender. The diesel capacity serves as a backup only in cases of heightened operational requirements, ensuring that the response capabilities of ACTF&R remain unaffected.

ACT ESA Commissioner Georgeina Whelan described the vehicle as the most modern firefighting vehicle globally, incorporating numerous state-of-the-art features. 

“This vehicle has been designed to deliver a range of environmental, workplace health and safety, and operational benefits for both ACTF&R staff and the ACT community,” she said.  

“The design of vehicle interiors is driven by firefighter safety in mind and driven by our ambition to embrace diversity by catering for a wider range of employees through ergonomic design and the clever application of technology.” 

The Australian first plug-in hybrid electric heavy vehicle will undergo familiarization and intensive training with ACTF&R firefighters to ensure a smooth transition and ensure community safety in Canberra. 

“The ACT is a global leader in reducing emissions. This plug-in hybrid fire truck is an Australian first and an important moment for fire services around the nation. This continues the ACT’s leadership on climate change and our efforts to encourage innovation for a zero emissions future,” Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury said. 

“I look forward to seeing more cutting-edge vehicles taking to the road across the ACT, and the country, as we continue to work towards a cleaner future.”
