The Australian Government has released the country’s first Data Strategy, setting a clear path for an effective, safe, ethical and secure use of Australia’s data system for the next four years.

Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business Stuart Robert said the Data Strategy was developed in consultation with private, research and not-for-profit sectors and with consideration of both public sector data and data in the broader economy.

“‘The Data Strategy is part of our commitment to deliver better services to all Australians, and it will power our national ambition to become a modern, data-driven society by 2030,” Minister Robert said.

“Through the Strategy and accompanying Action Plan, we outline how we will create, use and share data across all levels of government while maintaining the right safeguards to keep this data secure.”

The Strategy will help guide the Australian Government’s intent and efforts as it moves towards its 2030 goal for the country.

The Strategy will focus on maximising the value of data, trust and protection, and enabling data use for businesses, individuals, non-government and government sectors. It will be setting out those initiatives within the expected delivery timeframe of 2025.

At the end of 2025, the Australian Government will then update the Strategy to implement new initiatives.

Minister for Superannuation, Financial Services and Digital Economy Jane Hume said that establishing a plan was an important step in unlocking the value of data across the economy.

“Data is the lifeblood of the digital economy and can help Australian businesses be more innovative and effective. It helps to create new jobs, enables the use of emerging technologies, delivers improved outcomes for Australians and allows Government to provide frictionless and trusted services,” Minister Hume said.

“We want to maintain dialogue with industry about how we can create the right settings to get the most out of our data. I look forward to discussing how the Data Strategy can best reflect a common vision for Australia’s future.”

The Australian Government’s Data Strategy complements other initiatives such as the broader Digital Economy Strategy and the Digital Government Strategy.
