Deputy Premier Roger Cook endorsed as WA's next Premier

In a significant development for Western Australia’s political landscape, Deputy Premier Roger Cook has received the endorsement of the Labour Party as the state’s next premier.

The announcement came after the Deputy Premier secured the backing of a key party faction, solidifying his position as the frontrunner. During a press conference, Cook and Minister for Transport and Planning Rita Saffioti outlined their vision for the state’s future.

“Together, we are ready to be the next premier and deputy premier of Western Australia,” Cook said.

“We are a united team who will work hard every day to serve the people of Western Australia. I’m ready to lead. I’m ready to be premier.”

While Cook and Saffioti’s appointments still require ratification by the Labour caucus, it is expected that WA Premier McGowan will officially step down by the end of this week.

During his address, Cook highlighted the achievements of the current administration, such as establishing a stable government and exhibiting robust budget management.

Cook pledged to continue this trajectory of success under his own leadership.

“We’ve worked hard as a government under Mark McGowan to make WA the best state in Australia,” he said.

“Under our leadership, we will continue this journey.”

Cook’s agenda placed a strong emphasis on social justice, highlighting his dedication to supporting the most marginalized individuals in society.

He also emphasized the need to ensure that economic prosperity is channelled to benefit everyone, underscoring his commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable society.

Both Cook and Saffioti acknowledged the challenges ahead, including the pressures on the health system, worsening housing situation, labour shortages and recent controversies involving institutions like the Perth Mint.

As the Labour caucus prepares to ratify Roger Cook and Rita Saffioti’s appointments, all eyes are on the new leadership team and their ability to navigate the challenges ahead while delivering on their vision for a prosperous Western Australia.
