Australian Government launches revamped national security website

The Australian Government has just unveiled a significantly enhanced national security website, making it easier for Australians to protect themselves from terrorism and find information about what to do in a terrorist attack.

Due to the recent tragic terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said that Australians shouldn’t be complacent about the terrorist threat. She stated that the terrorist threats demonstrated the need for countries to have ongoing vigilance.

“The National Terrorism Threat Level remains at ‘probable’. Australia is a safe country, and while no one should be afraid – we should all continue to be vigilant,” Minister Andrews said.

“The updated National Security website gives Australians the tools and resources they need to report possible signs of terrorism and violent extremism. It provides easy access to information about what you should do to stay safe in the event of an attack.”

The changes on the National Security website will make it easier for businesses to understand any of the risks they may encounter and how to audit their existing security measures.  The updates will also provide Australians the right advice on how to keep themselves, their assets, people and customers safe from terrorist threats.

Protecting the Australian community from terrorism and violent extremism is a key priority for the Australian Government. From 2013-14, the Australian Government has allocated more than $69 million to programs that counter violent extremism within the country. These programs address all forms of violent extremism such as religiously and ideologically motivated violent extremism.

Last week, the Australian Government provided the Australian Federal Police with important new powers to protect Australians from terrorist offenders who continue to pose a high-risk at the conclusion of their sentence, with the Counter-Terrorism Legislation Amendment (High Risk Terrorist Offenders) Bill passing the Parliament.
