The Australian Government has announced the updated List of Critical Technologies aimed at securing the country’s future and maximizing opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and societal advancement.  

“Quantum technologies, for example, are identified as a priority field within the List of Critical Technologies, and are poised to accelerate developments in sensing, communications and computing for generations to come,” Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic said. 

“This List of Critical Technologies builds on the Government’s commitment to expand the number of next-generation businesses working at the forefront of our changing economy.” 

The List of Critical Technologies includes advanced manufacturing and materials technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, advanced information and communication technologies, quantum technologies, autonomous systems, robotics, positioning, timing and sensing, biotechnologies, and clean energy generation and storage technologies. 

By updating and prioritizing these technology fields, the Australian Government aims to provide ample opportunities for economic growth, facilitate the creation of well-paying jobs, and enhance the lives of its citizens.  

The government’s vision for maximizing the potential of these critical technologies and managing the associated risks is outlined in the accompanying Critical Technologies Statement. 

Of particular significance are the clusters of critical technologies related to artificial intelligence and robotics, which are driving higher productivity across businesses nationwide and creating well-paid employment opportunities.  

These advancements have the potential to revolutionize industries and contribute significantly to the country’s economic prosperity. 

The updated List of Critical Technologies complements the Australian Government’s recently released National Quantum Strategy, further emphasizing the importance of prioritizing cutting-edge technologies in the nation’s development plans.  

In line with this commitment, the Albanese Government’s National Reconstruction Fund is targeting a substantial $1 billion investment specifically directed towards critical technologies to foster growth and innovation within this sector. 

“The list includes a new priority on clean energy generation and storage technologies. Breakthroughs in this area will be crucial in our efforts to improve energy security and achieve net zero emissions,” Minister Husic said. 

“The Government is also targeting $1 billion of investment in critical technologies through the National Reconstruction Fund, which will further bolster Australia’s industry and economy.” 

By prioritizing these key enabling technology fields, Australia is poised to leverage their innovation potential, foster economic resilience, and enhance the well-being of its citizens.
