Australia invests $74M for new research hubs and training centres

As part of its commitment to commercialising Australian research, the Government is investing $74 million to open new research hubs and training centres around the country.

Under the Industrial Transformation Research Program, $36.4 million will be provided to fund the construction of eight new Research Hubs.

The eight Industrial Transformation Research Hubs are the following:

ARC Research Hub for Connected Sensors for Health
ARC Industry Transformation Research Hub for Resilient and Intelligent Infrastructure Systems (RIIS) in Urban, Resources and Energy Sectors
ARC Research Hub in Intelligent Robotic Systems for Real-Time Asset Management
ARC Research Hub for Nutrients in a Circular Economy (NiCE)
ARC Research Hub for Supercharging Tropical Aquaculture Through Genetic Solutions
ARC Research Hub for Functional and Sustainable Fibres
ARC Research Hub for Advanced Manufacturing with 2D Materials (AM2D)
ARC Research Hub for Digital Bioprocess Development

Meanwhile, a $37.8 million funding is provided to help see the following new Training Centres commence their operations:

ARC Training Centre for Accelerated Future Crop Development
ARC Training Centre for Facilitated Advancement of Australia’s Bioactives (FAAB)
ARC Training Centre in Energy Technologies for Future Grids
ARC Training Centre for Behavioural Insights for Technology Adoption (BITA)
ARC Training Centre in Bioplastics and Biocomposites
ARC Training Centre for Optimal Ageing
ARC Training Centre for Healing Country
ARC Training Centre for Next-Gen Technologies in Biomedical Analysis

Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge said the investment into the Industrial Transformation Research Program will create stronger research and industry connections.

“These facilities will bring together our finest research minds and leading businesses to tackle the key strategic challenges facing our nation, our region and the world,” Minister Tudge said.

“They will ensure we are getting the most out of our world-class research while transferring that information into real-world outcomes that will help our post-COVID economic recovery and strengthen our nation.”

Minister Tudge also said the training centres will equip a future generation of researchers by giving students and postdoctoral researchers practical skills and experience through industry placements.

Under the current funding of the program, the Government intends to prioritise the research for advanced manufacturing, cyber security, food and agribusiness, medical technologies and pharmaceuticals, mining equipment, technology and services and oil, gas and energy resources.

The Industrial Transformation Research Program, which is led by the Australian Research Council, offers a suite of funding schemes that are attractive to both university-based researchers and industries.
